California Fly Fishing

California Fly Fishing Those fishermen that have ever done any California fly fishing will be the first to exclaim how great this state is for fishing. One of the unique aspects of the fly fishing sport in the state is the option of either fresh or salt water fly fishing, all within an easy driving distances. In addition, due to the warm weather year round, winter fly fishing is just as feasible as fishing in the summer, which makes this a great get-away for northern anglers that are used to snow and ice covered lakes and streams for four to five months of the year.

To understand the variety of California fly fishing opportunities, a few of the major California fly fishing rivers will be discussed below. Remember that a bit of research ahead of time will help you prepare the right tackle and rod and reel to make your fishing experience memorable.

Lower Sacramento River

This is one of the largest waterways in California, and the fish are a size to match. It is not unusual to catch a sixteen inch or bigger rainbow trout, and trout in excess of two feet are not rare in this highly populated river.

The Lower Sac, as it is known by natives, also has Chinook and Steelhead salmon, largemouth and smallmouth bass, and baitfish such as shad. The Lower Sacramento can be fished from a boat or by using waders, depending on the depth of the area that is being fished. The size of the river allows for numerous anglers to be fishing at one time without crowding or even noticing each other presence.

Fall River

Best known for its spring fishing, the Fall River offers some wonderful fly fishing opportunities. About 300 miles north of San Francisco the Fall River is a boat fisherman's ideal river. Since most of the land around the Fall River is privately owned shore fishing is not practical in most locations along the river. There are large wild rainbow trout throughout the Fall River that are excellent sports fish for both a beginner and a serious angler.

McCloud River

If you enjoy fishing for large 14 inch rainbow or 10 inch brown trout, this is just the waterway for you. The scenery is magnificent all throughout the river but the top part of the river, above Lake McCloud, is best known for its rainbow trout fishing. The lower part of the McCloud River is less popular but offers some above average brown trout and excellent shore fishing opportunities.

California fly fishing is some of the best in the United States, and the world. Plan your next fishing vacation to California, and enjoy the many waterways and fishing opportunities the state has to offer.
