Fly Fishing

If you are looking to understand more about the art of fly fishing, it is important to learn as much as you can. You will want to gain as much knowledge as possible, to improve your technique and learn how to catch the bigger fish.
What is Fly Fishing?
Flyfishing is the act of hunting for fish using an artificial fly as bait to catch the fish. It dates back about 10,000 years, and has many different traditions and techniques, but, like most sports, has changed to keep up with modern technological advancements. Today it has become an ever-increasingly popular sport.
Types of Flyfishing
DRY FLIES
The more well known type is called dry fly fishing. This technique uses an artificial fly that is cast into the water, to float on top. As it floats it will hopefully pass by a fish and entice it to come to the top of the water and, a stike!. Then, once the fish is caught on the hook it will try and wiggle itself off and in the process become tired enough to land the fish with a net. That is the simple version.
Many people like this type of fishing because the fisherman can see everything that is going on. He casts in the direction of a fish he can see, the fly can be seen from the water, and he can see when the strike happens. The major challenge to this type of fishing is that trout and other fish seem to prefer to feed underwater and are somewhat reluctant to come up to take a fly.
NYMPHS/EMERGERS
Another type of fishing with flies is called nymph fishing. Nymphs are what come out of the eggs that flies lay in the lake or river. They make their way to the surface and there they become a fly. This type of fishing uses different forms of nymphs that are weighted down to remain beneath the surface. You can usually land a few this way if they aren't rising to the surface to feed. Trout are opportunistic and can be lazy. Why look for food if it is coming to them?
Types of Fish for Fishing with Flies
Almost all types of fish are able to be caught on a fly, the more popular in freshwater being trout, salmon, bass, and most game fish. Trout is the most popular due to several factors.
Trout feed and live in shallow waters that are easily traveled and accessible. They are abundant due to stocking and catch and release practices. They are varied in size, fight and lets don't forget beauty. Feeding on a large supply of small insects that live in and fall into the water they are cautious and can be very picky eaters and a challenge to catch.
These are only two of many types of artificial flies used. Later we will explore more in greater detail.
Flyfishing is a rewarding sport or hobby, and incredibly relaxing. Why not give it a try?
